A sawmill works by turning raw logs into usable, dimensioned lumber through a fixed sequence of cuts. In short: logs are debarked, squared up on a primary saw (the head rig), broken down into rough boards, edged and trimmed to size, then sorted and dried. Everything a modern wood factory does – from a small portable mill to a giant industrial line – is a variation of these same steps.

What a sawmill actually does

A log is round, tapered, wet, and covered in bark. Finished lumber is straight, flat, dry, and cut to standard sizes. A sawmill exists to close that gap as efficiently as possible while wasting the least amount of wood. The best sawyers plan every cut to get the most high-grade boards out of each log – a skill called sawing for grade. Every mill balances yield (how much usable lumber comes out of the log) against throughput (how fast logs move through).

The sawmill process, step by step

1. Log intake and sorting

Logs arrive by truck and are sorted by species, diameter, and quality. Straight, large, defect-free logs are set aside for high-grade lumber; smaller or curved logs go to pallets, fencing, or chipping.

2. Debarking

The log passes through a debarker, which strips off bark with rotating rings or teeth. Bark dulls blades fast and hides dirt and stones that can wreck a blade, so removing it protects the equipment and keeps the cut clean.

3. Primary breakdown – the head rig

This is the heart of the mill. The debarked log is clamped onto a moving carriage and pushed through the main saw, called the head rig. The first cuts remove the rounded outside faces (the slabs) to create a squared cant. The sawyer decides how to rotate the log between cuts to expose the best grain and avoid knots.

4. Resawing and edging

The squared cant is sent to a resaw that slices it into rough boards of the target thickness. An edger then trims the bark-edged sides (wane) to give each board clean, parallel edges and its final width.

5. Trimming

A trimmer cuts the boards to length and removes end defects like splits or rot. The board is now rectangular and to size – but still rough-sawn and wet.

6. Sorting and stacking

Boards are sorted by size and grade, then stacked with small spacers (stickers) between each layer so air can flow around every board.

7. Drying

Fresh-cut (green) lumber can be nearly half water by weight and must be dried or it will warp, shrink, and crack. Air drying leaves stacks in the open for weeks to months; kiln drying uses a heated kiln for days and is required for most construction and furniture lumber.

8. Planing and grading

Dried lumber runs through a planer to smooth the faces and reach exact final dimensions (this is why a “2×4” is actually smaller than 2 by 4 inches). Finally, each board is graded for strength and appearance, stamped, and shipped.

Band sawmill vs circular sawmill

A band sawmill uses a thin, continuous blade that removes very little wood per cut (a thin kerf), so you get more boards per log – which is why most portable and high-yield mills use band saws. A circular sawmill uses a large spinning disc that cuts fast and handles frozen or dirty logs well, but wastes more wood as sawdust. Rule of thumb: band = more lumber per log; circular = more logs per hour.
